Bored? Check your spam mail subjects…

December 5th, 2006 by Stefan Juhl

Just recently my smtp server was configured so it respond as being busy and tells other servers to try again later. This is a real spam killer since most spam isn’t being sent with real smtp servers. Now I only receive about 30% of the spam mail I got before. As a side effect to this I’ve begun to notice the subjects of the spam mail I still get and it can get a bit entertaining!

Most will recognize subjects like “More Size More Pleasure” and “Boost your satisfaction” but it seems like spammers think it’s better to play a little on psychology or something. I was quite entertained by reading subjects like these:

  • hehe man, why your weenie is so small?? ; )
  • How long you will live with small ramrod?! ; -))
  • hello, Smallest weenie of the year, how are you? : -)
  • haha man, why your meat is so small?? ; ))
  • Take your Award - Mr. Smallest weenie 2006 : -))

These are of course to sell some sort of muscle improvement stuff… hmm.. That just reminded me of Daven’s recent “Matt Cutts spot the difference game“.

Well, the fun doesn’t stop here. The subjects can be really weird too. Like these:

  • We sold enough tubs for her to earn a couple of fun prizes.
  • coffee table nuclear family
  • crash landing illustrator

For the last two I expected some really interesting products and I was disappointed to see them just being for some sort of investment stuff. I would’ve loved to see a “coffee table nuclear family”, it generates some funny pictures in my head.

Anyway, if you think I just wrote this because I had nothing relevant to say, then you’re only partly right. I actually wanted to lead you to two articles about some research on headlines and wording in ad copy: The Impact of Seeing Your Name in Headlines and Google AdWords Tip: A ‘Guaranteed’ Way to Boost Your ROI - via SEOmoz.

And remember to read it all next time I post something weird since there might be a gold nugget somewhere…

    Hi Stefan,

At the end you managed to pull it out :P
    Interesting.

For good headlines a good resource is http://copyblogger.com/ too.

PS. Can we see a picture of your award? :D

  2. Stefan Juhl Says:

Yes, copyblogger is a pretty good blog too.

Unfortunately I haven’t received the award mentioned. Probably because the email wasn’t meant for me since they sent them to something like rufhsuh[at]one-of-my-domains.com

    Hello Stefan

Believe it or not I’ve actualy started collecting the spam - will probably try to turn it into a piece of digital art of some sort - but for now I relly enjoy watching the stuff evolve. Nice posts, enjoying your blog, or like the spammers say ‘Marvelous, Thanx - will spread this’ -erg, now this comment probably looks liek spam, oh dear :-)
