Lack of Link Building Causes Drop in Search Traffic

April 24th, 2007 by Stefan Juhl

Just as the title says, if you aren’t continuously building links for your website there’s a big risk it will cause a decrease in search traffic over time. I’m not referring to search engine algorithms, but simply that if you’re in a just slightly competitive niche, you’re probably not the only one doing SEO - and guess what will then happen?

Yes, if any SEO work is being done for any of the competing websites in your niche, they’ll also be building links to those websites. When you get ranked #1 for the desired keywords, you might be inclined to stop the link building. But consider that the moment you stop building links towards your own website, your competitive advantage will slowly disappear as your competitors are getting more - and maybe even better - links than you.

Your competitors won’t beat you overnight, but you never know their next step. So stay in the game, build links and keep your competitive advantage.

I am looking forward to read this! Sounds pretty interesting… Will there be any details about the “trusted links” themselves?

[…] Stefan discusses how SEO will be ongoing for competitive markets whether you want to believe it or not. You competitors are doing SEO and once you stop linking they’ll be looking at you in their rear view mirror. […]

By link building, do you mean having other sites link to you, or linking to other sites or both? I realize that google goes with the idea that the more sites that link to you then the better your page ranking probably is but is yahoo the same or are they more focused with the meta?

Francois, I’ll consider covering what I deem as trusted sites / links.

Mike, yes links to from other websites to yours. And that goes for all the search engines.
