Apparently SEO is illegal…

May 18th, 2007 by Stefan Juhl

Here’s a funny video I came across - SEO is illegal.. Yes, that’s right. SEO tactics like keyword/link stuffing and publishing your content on multiple domains, is illegal according to the guy in the video to the right.

English isn’t my first language, so I thought maybe I don’t get the meaning of illegal and decided to check some definitions of illegal. The most common definition was this: prohibited by law or by official or accepted rules. Hmm…

  • “prohibited by law”
Is there laws that say I can’t utilize things like keyword stuffing or automatic generated content? I haven’t heard of them..
  • “prohibited by accepted rules”
I can’t remember having accepted any rules for how to make websites. Have you accepted any rules?
  • “prohibited by official rules”
Is there official rules that I don’t know about? Has Google or other search engines made official rules for inclusion and ranking?

Seriously, calling SEO illegal is one of the stupidest remarks I’ve ever heard… Dude, there’s the GUIDELINES - but there’s no frickin’ rules or laws that prohibit me from publishing crap content on my website!

Oh, did I mention that one of the products offered on his website is “SEO Pages* additions with Einstein provided content” and did you notice the star? The explanation of that goes like “*a maximum of 3 SEO keywords will be added per page addition” - so this guy, stating that keyword stuffing etc. is illegal, will maximum stuff 3 keywords into each of your pages.. WTF dude, what’s it gonna be? is it illegal or not?

Damn he does not sound like anybody I would have something to do with. Maybe it sounds fair in the ears of the regular john do?

Damn! That’s it - I’m outta business hehe

  3. Carsten Cumbrowski Says:

English is my second language too, but I remember the word “illegal” even from English classes in school. Yeah, illegal means “prohibited by law” and we are not talking about wrong parking here, but a misdemeanor if you are lucky, but most likely a felony = no jail, but prison time or worse.

He is an idiot. search engines “deindex my websites”, if I have the same site on more than one domain, right.. how does “deindexing” work in practice by the way? :)

oh and the “won’t allow your domain names to be indexed again on that website”… Alles klar? hehehe.

The question is… is stupidity illegal? Well, it should be hehe.

p.s. You have a canonical url issue. www.stefanjuhl.com and stefanjuhl.com are both working fine. Google has only the homepage indexed for the www version, but you might want to 301 all www requests anyway.

    Just FYI.

  5. Stefan Juhl Says:

Tommy, yeah that’s the problem. Regular people that hear him might actually believe what he says…

Carsten, you’re right about the canonical url issues - I also have some pages indexed both with and without the trailing slashes. And even though it’s just a couple of lines I should add to my .htaccess I still haven’t got around doing it. There’s so much I’d like to do with this site, but you probably know how it is, with ones own sites always being last at getting the needed attention.

Where is this crap even from?

  7. O’Flaherty - » Dr. Robert Silkey says SEO is illegal! Says:

[…] Well Stefan Juhl found a video on Google Video with one such internet “expert”, a Doctor Robert Silkey (CEO of Einstein Dental), who actually says that various SEO (Search Engine Optimization) techniques are illegal! […]

  8. Old Spider Says:

He wasn’t referring to SEO, but to website or search spamming. SEO, in fair practice, isn’t spamming at all. Search spamming leads search engine users to false positives and clogs the databases of search engines, both of which are bad for the users and the search engines. Users will stop using search engines which keep returning them junk, instead opting to use those engines which give them valuable links. While this also keeps people away from visiting the sites which are spamming, the deficit is against the search engines which a lot more to lose from a lack of costumers; therefore, the major search engines and most search engines in general have opted against website spammers.

Certainly, it isn’t ‘illegal’ by the greater legislature to commit website spamming, but it is illegal to the terms of use for those search engines.

  9. - name removed per request, SJ - Says:

That makes no sense at all. It looks like the poor doctor pulled an all nighter. Where do they find these people?

  10. john andrews Says:

“we report everyone, everytime…we are the spam police”

Dumb statement. Check out his network. I dare ya.

  11. Stefan Juhl Says:

yeah, he sure has many interesting sites in his network.

  12. fantomaster Says:

On Syndk8.com they have a nice motto: “When outing a fellow blackhat’s SEO tricks, know that someone will know someone who knows someone who’ll give you a proper arse-kicking.”

Maybe this little pocket Spam-Hitler would like to learn this himself the hard way? Could make for a lot of ogre fun. Not that WE would EVER even think of such… :)

  13. PornSux Says:

Well I can’t agree with everything he says but they should definitely start reporting the porn industry. Someone needs to put a stop to those wankers. And all those stupid aggregate sites out there too. SEO or no, think how much attention your sites would get then.
