Aggressive SEO? “dissallow all in robots.txt to avoid virus”
March 17th, 2008 by Stefan JuhlFor one of our sites we received an email that recommends adding “disallow all” in our robots.txt to avoid virus attacks. That’s just too funny but also an interesting aggressive approach to SEO I assume. If one can get competing sites to disallow search engine robots and thereby have them removed from the index it means increase in ones own rankings right!
Here’s the email we got (freely translated from German to English, original version further down):
At the moment millions of web servers are being attacked by viruses.
Please integrate the following addition in your root directory to protect your website.
www.XXXXXXXX.XXX/robots.txt
You create the Robots-file with your editor:
_____________________________________________User-agent: *
Disallow: /
______________________________________________Save it as robots.txt and put in it your root directory.
Only this way it will be sure that no harm will occur, since you forbid the virus to visit your website.
Hurry, since an heavy attack can be expected this week.Any questions?

That’s a weird one! But I think the people how actually have a website and are competent enough to edit a robots. txt file etc should know the problems it could cause.

Yeah hopefully.. But I do think that some people will fall for it though.

This plus the one in Mikkel Demib Svendsens blog could indicate some changes. It’s an evil approach, but I think the socialengeneering-aspect is very interesting
